Why Maintenance Ensures Safety04/08/2014 Back To Blog
Hundreds of accidents related to garage doors are reported each year while many more are kept secret and never make it to the statistics. From minor injuries to amputations and fatal accidents people still get hurt from snapped garage door springs, collapsing panels and damaged parts. Does that mean that garage systems are dangerous or is it basically our fault that we still endure serious problems and get injured often?
Good maintenance will prevent accidents
This is not the time to point fingers or try to find who to put the blame on for garage door accidents. Surely, garage doors are heavy mechanisms but we definitely have our share of responsibility. We are supposed to be the brains and be aware of the heavy door and the complex system. Your overhead door will collapse only if it's not installed properly or never maintained. So, both good installation and regular maintenance are important. After all, opener systems today integrate safety features, which can prevent accidents by stopping or reversing the movement of the door.
What's the point of investing in modern garage door openers if we would just let the entire system break down? A great number of the already installed sensors in the country do not work due to negligence to maintain them. Many people get injured by broken springs because they fail to replace them on time. It's important to remember that all garage door parts have limited lifespan. They are also affected by various factors and may even wear sooner than anticipated. There will certainly come a time when they will need to be replaced and in the meantime they will need maintenance.
The purpose of garage door maintenance is to avoid issues. Garage doors are not installed to offer safety but security; though, they must operate safely. Maintenance ensures that! Good and thorough inspections will point out problems, which must be fixed. That's why maintenance must take place often. If you check the sensors at least once every month, you know you can rely on them. If you forget about them and the need to check the whole system and forget to make the necessary repairs, you take your chances with your own safety.
